Position Overview:

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is seeking a motivated candidate to serve as the School Psychologist for the IDJJ Extended Educational Services Program. The ideal candidate for this role will possess previous psychological experience in an educational setting, have a positive mindset, and be passionate about making a difference in the lives of at-risk youth in our care. In this position, the incumbent will participate as a liaison for home-school re-entry student conferences, implement behavioral testing/scoring, and conduct group and individual counseling. The incumbent in this position will assist with special education evaluations and re-evaluations as well as ensuring an environment that fosters growth and opportunity for the youth in our care. Essential Functions:

  • Participates in the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) School District #428 as a liaison for home-school re-entry student conferences, facilitating as an Individual Education Plan (IEP) team member and determining appropriate instructional programming.
  • Administers and scores psychological evaluations for special education eligibility purposes.
  • Serves as Special Education Evaluator for the School District #428 Extended Services.
  • Conducts individual and group counseling.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires the School Psychologist Endorsement from the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Requires a master's degree in psychology or educational psychology from a recognized college or university approved by the State Board of Education, supplemented by one ( 1) school year's supervised professional psychological experience with children of school age.

Preferred Qualifications: (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers extensive knowledge of the theories and assumptions underlying the field of psychology.
  • Prefers a working knowledge of the employing agency's rules and regulations governing the field of school psychology.
  • Prefers ability to give, score and interpret psychological tests.
  • Prefers ability to prepare complex written and oral reports.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.

Over 900 staff members from across various departments—security, programming, education, mental health, and more—collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically, emotionally, and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency, engages families, and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois’ communities.
